VCCP's Compare the Meerkat campaign has fast become one the UK's best loved campaigns. The French version Les Furets ( the Ferrets), sees Alexei's cousin Hervé, ferreting the unfindable. The piece was directed by Sam Fell for Oscar Winning production house, Passion Pictures.
I scored this piece for solo trumpet with full symphony orchestra, the music brief was for a jaunty pirate shanty that brought Hervé's quest to life with an emphasis on the rather abrupt twist at the end.
Sky already had a piece of music in mind for this spot, Debussy's Clair De Lune from Suite Bergamasque.
The brief was for a fluid expressive performance of the piece that supported their edit. Two takes on NI's excellent New York Steinway Model D (along with some clever editing) and here's the result.

Haiku has received extensive performance at several leading international Electroacoustic festivals such as: The Sound and Music Computing Conference, Barcelona (2011), New Adventures in Sound Art, Toronto (2012), The FILE festival - Sao Paulo Brazil (2010), The 2011 Nashville SoundCrawl, The University of Kentucky, Sonic Rain - Oregon, Encuentro Del Arte Sonoro - Buenos Aires, Argentina (2010) and the 3rd Practice Festival at the University or Richmond in West Virginia.
In 2011 Haiku won the University of Limericks Diffusion Prize and was presented on RTÉ Music Nova, Irelands premiere new music radio program, by Bernard Clarke.
It takes as a primary sound source, a recitation of the epic Japanese poem 'Oku no Hosomichi' (The narrow road to the interior) by Matsuo Basho (1644 - 1694). The work was penned as he made an epic journey of around 1200 miles on foot through feudal Japan. The poet's travels in the text have since inspired many people to follow in his footsteps and trace his journey for themselves. In one of its most memorable passages, Bashō suggests that "every day is a journey, and the journey itself home". Basho is recognized as a master of brief and clear haiku. His poetry is internationally renowned, and within Japan many of his poems are reproduced on monuments and traditional sites.
The singing voice used in Haiku is an additive synthesis instrument realized from the recitation of the poem with Spear software. Granular synthesis sounds were made with the Max/Msp patch Kenaxis. FM and resonant filter synthesis sounds were scripted in PureData. Haiku was mixed in stereo in Logic Studio. Additional sounds were made from recordings of ambiances in Tokyo Station, and the Shibuya crossing.
